We did it! We remodeled our guest bath in our timber loft apartment in Chicago from dated traditional beige to modern contemporary blue!
Before After
BACKSTORY
We planned on renovating the guest bath since we moved in and we finally got around to getting this project completed all on our own and getting this post done! Picking everything out for this project was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be. I usually know EXACTLY what I want. I had so many ideas between Pinterest, Instagram, and magazine tear outs that picking out a style was hard. It took about a 6 months, but I started noticing a common sytle what I was saving and started honing in on what I wanted for the remodel.
We decided to keep the bathroom tile since it was newer and in fine shape, plus that would have been a much more extensive renovation and expensive. The tub and tile were a cream color that I gave that a white paint job to freshen up.
At first we were thinking we would just keep the current vanity and put on a new counter and sink. The vanity was cream color like the shower tile, so I painted it blue just to see what we thought (I had saved a lot of blue vanities on my idea boards). Well the color was great, but the vanity did not have any drawers and just was not going to work. Also, picking out a counter/sink was just as hard if not harder than just getting a whole new vanity.
So we decided new vanity it is and WOW are there a lot of options and price points. It took about three weeks to decide on a vanity, I really wanted something with a thick counter and this fit the bill! We finally placed the order to Home Depot and over the next two weeks while we are waiting for it to be delivered I figured out exactly what I wanted for the mirror, knobs, light fixure etc.
I knew I wanted a statement in this bathroom and wanted to try out wallpaper. One night down a deep rabbit hole online looking at wallpapers and I came across this one, I hadn’t seen it before anywhere on Pinterest and could only find one posting about it an an office closet. I kinda fell in love with it right away, super unique on trend but not trendy. We love it and so does everyone else that sees it!
REALITY
Just as we found out the vanity was delivered to Home Depot COVID-19 hits and we went into lockdown. From then on the project really just dragged out. I thought this project would take a week HAHAH (see my last insta post from April 25th 2020!)
The pandemic really threw a wrench into getting this projected completed, going to Home Depot became near impossible. We definitely procrastinated and that last 3% of misc final touch ups really took the longest BUT after 4 months we finally finished! and now a 10 months since we started I am getting around to posting it!
WHAT WE DID
I had planned on making this a how to/what we did, but it was going to be too long so …. this is the jist
- We took out the old vanity, light fixture and mirror – sanded and painted walls and ceiling
- Painted the tub & shower with tile paint (everyone should do this! detailed post on that here)
- Hung wallpaper- don’t let the internet fool you, this was hard and frustrating to get lined up without bubbles!
- We centered the vanity on the wall, but the plumbing was to the left so we had to cut some holes in back of the vanity to run the pipe through the sides of it. Installed new faucet, larger drain cap, and new knobs.
- Laid tile where the old vanity used to be that was now showing, the vanity was on the left wall without tile under it – yayy Home Depot had the same tile to match ps this was our first time using a wet saw!
- Hung a new light fixture, which luckily was already centered on the wall, so it was an easy swap.
- Put up a new rounded curtain rod, shower head, and storage rack.
- Added floating shelves above toilet.
- Installed new door knob and painted door brackets black to match.
We love how it turned out! Let us know what you think and if you have any questions leave them in the comments!
